Blog Post #4: Creative Writing homework

I am from incense and palo santos,

Sounding bowls and healing frequencies.

I am from seitan and tofu,

And busy saturdays are spent at the temple.

Dozing off on turkish rugs and bamboo floors,

Make sure your chakras are in order,

or that might mean bad karma.

I am from pixie cuts and politics,

Why won’t you let her be a girl?

Virginity is a construct,

Never let a man tell you what to do,

I am from atheism and inappropriate questions.

Girls need to try their hardest or else they’ll fall behind.

I am from chapter books and spelling bees,

Write in your journal everyday.

I am from spanglish words,

And bad pronunciation.

I am from a weekend at dad’s,

Cable cartoons and bunk bed with little brother.

They deny it ever happened,

But that’s all I can remember.

Author's Note:
I hope to convey both the good and bad of a unique childhood that would make me the person I am. This was so much fun! I loved being able to look back on what made my adolescence special and how it would provide me with the diverse experiences I needed to develop my identity. I wanted the poem to feel like a progression through my life, starting as a young child and later going into being a teen. I really just wanted to play on the idea that someone's childhood is more than good or bad, it's a realistic in between.
